Original Site of the Killing of Wild Bill Hickok

James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok was shot and killed in the back of the head on August 2, 1876, while playing poker at Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon in Deadwood. The saloon was later renamed Saloon #10, but the current building is not the original. The original building burned down, but the original site of the killing is still marked.
Jack McCall, an unsuccessful gambler, shot Hickok. McCall was able to escape by claiming that Hickok had murdered his brother. However, McCall was eventually captured and tried for Hickok’s murder.

The hand of cards that Hickok is said to have been holding when he was shot is known as the “Dead Man’s Hand” and consists of two pairs: black aces and eights.

Deadwood still honors Hickok and has a stage play called The Trial of Jack McCall that recreates the shooting and capture.
